ABOUT THE ARTIST
Through her work, Laury is both a therapist, and a self taught expressive artist. With 8 years of psychology education and late identified neurodivergence, Laury found art as the only thing that can fill the liminal space between knowing and feeling. Through her abstract expressive paintings, she seeks to express where words reach their limitations. She paints through experiences of raw feeling, seeking to unmask and reclaim the freedom of childhood.
Her practice is only interested in process, in this very moment right here and now, and is deeply shaped by her creative therapeutic approach, weaving mindfulness and relational psychodynamic praxis. Simply, her therapeutic and art works expand into one another. She believes strongly in the freedom in being more than one thing and lives her life as an artist throughout time, and as a therapist on the hour.
Her current collection, CHILDS PLAY seeks to bridge gaps of connection, where feelings are called to move through mark, mess, color. Laury alchemizes lived-and-listened-to experiences through acrylic and charcoal over canvas. Through her work, Laury embraces the unknown, in returning again and again to the present moment. To Laury, the canvas takes form and becomes an object, related to. Through being allowed to become and form, her body of work acts as a holding space for experiences of unmasking, growing up, and reviving childhood. To Laury, painting is a life or death experience, where the work holds everything she and those she is in relationship with can not fully contain, with words, alone.
CHILDS PLAY answers the call for connection, bridging limitations of what words express stories of enjoyment and endurance. To Laury, painting is the answer to the space between being understood and being felt. With painting, she has found a home here. Her work invites the viewer into relationship with not knowing, with being met with only the surface, and feeling more than what is seen.
She often works in layers, and when she becomes attached to the beauty in a piece, will often layer over it, leaving only small areas exposed. Through this process, she reveals an experience of masking and unmasking, shifting from states of active doing towards being with. She prefers to work large, and find herself literally lost within the work. Painting while sitting on the canvas allows Laury to situate her self and her body within the greater body of her work. Her process is deeply physical as much as it is emotional. Each painting holds all it can hold, as Laury pushes her work past aesthetic limitations.
CHILDS PLAY is an ever growing collection, a timeless space, a dream space where time is experienced differently. Where being lost is welcomed, and embraced. Where fear and pain are expressed and transformed and held with meaning that requires deep feeling on our part.
CHILDS PLAY invites a sense of permission and spaciousness to come as we are, to be witnessed, mirrored, and radically accepted for all of who we are, so we may be inspired to transform our relationships to ourselves, our communities, and our world.
To view a work of Laury’s is to re-enter into the often abandoned and dusty inner spaces of our childhoods. To view a work of Laury is to be immersed in pure heart.
