If you have spent late nights reading about high-masking autism, ADHD, or AuDHD (co-occurring Autism and ADHD), feeling a sudden, overwhelming wave of recognition, you have probably also felt the crash of imposter syndrome that follows right behind it.
You might catch yourself thinking: "What if I am just making excuses? Am I even 'allowed' to reach out to a neurodivergent-affirming therapist if I don't have an official diagnosis on paper?"
Let’s answer that question right away: No, you do not need an official autism (ASD), AuDHD, or ADHD diagnosis to start neurodivergent-affirming therapy.
Whether you are self-diagnosed, actively questioning your neurodivergence, identifying as a Highly Sensitive Person (HSP), or simply exhausted from trying to exist in a world that feels too loud and demanding, your lived experience is valid. You do not need a piece of paper to deserve accommodations, nervous system support, or a therapy space where you are understood.
Why Formal Assessments Are Out of Reach (or Inaccurate) for So Many People
In a traditional medical model, a formal neuropsychological evaluation is treated as the ultimate gatekeeper of self-understanding. However, a therapist who is both neurodivergent-affirming and neurodivergent-informed understands why so many teens and adults never receive a formal diagnosis:
1. Outdated and Biased Diagnostic Criteria
For decades, the diagnostic criteria for both autism and ADHD were built almost exclusively around observing young, white, cisgender boys who displayed externalized behaviors (like bouncing off the classroom walls or struggling with outward social rules).
If you grew up internalizing your distress (daydreaming, people-pleasing, over-preparing, perfectionism, or quietly shutting down in your bedroom after school), your struggles were likely missed by teachers and doctors. Women, BIPOC, queer and trans folks, and deeply creative or empathetic people are still routinely misdiagnosed with generalized anxiety, depression, or mood disorders before anyone looks at how their nervous system actually processes the world.
2. The "AuDHD Camouflage" Effect
When you have both Autism and ADHD, your traits can actively hide each other from traditional evaluators. Your ADHD impulsivity and craving for novelty might mask your autistic need for routine, while your autistic conscientiousness and rule-following might mask your ADHD executive dysfunction. On the outside, you might look "fine": on the inside, you are caught in an exhausting tug-of-war.
3. Cost, Waitlists, and Assessment Burnout
In California, a comprehensive adult neuropsychological evaluation out of pocket often costs between $2,000 and $5,000+, with waitlists stretching for months or even years. Many adult evaluators still aren't trained to spot high-masking neurodivergence. Sitting through hours of grueling testing only to be told, "You can't be autistic because you made eye contact and have a job," is deeply invalidating.
4. Privacy and Personal Autonomy
Many adults and parents of teens consciously choose not to pursue a formal medical diagnosis because they do not want a permanent diagnostic label attached to their electronic health records or insurance files. Wanting to protect your medical privacy should never lock you out of compassionate, informed care.
Why Self-Realization and "Questioning" Are Honored Here
Nobody spends hours researching sensory processing differences just for fun. People research neurodivergence because they are looking for language to explain a lifetime of feeling misunderstood.
Therapy with Laury is neurodivergent-affirming and neurodivergent-informed. Here, your process of self-diagnosis or questioning will always be respected.
- Bypassing Neurodivergent Imposter Syndrome: High-masking people are conditioned to doubt their own internal cues. When you have spent years pushing through sensory overload because everyone around you seemed fine, it is completely natural to second-guess yourself and wonder if you are "faking it." Therapy should be a safe place to unpack that self-doubt without being interrogated.
- Room to Be Unsure: You don't need to show up to session with a finalized label for yourself. Maybe you are trying to untangle where complex trauma ends and neurodivergence begins. Maybe you aren't sure if what you are feeling is AuDHD burnout, clinical depression, or chronic overwhelm. We get to explore those questions together with curiosity rather than pressure.
- Accommodations Are Free: Think of sensory and nervous system accommodations like curb cuts on a sidewalk: they were designed for wheelchairs, but they also help parents with strollers, travelers with luggage, and anyone with tired knees. Giving yourself permission to unmask, rest your sensory system, or work with your natural energy cycles doesn't take anything away from anyone else. If a tool helps you suffer less, you are allowed to use it!
A Personal Note from Laury: On Questioning and Late Realization
I know how disorienting it feels to start connecting the dots of your own neurodivergence later in life, wondering if you are finally seeing the truth or just reading too much into things. I’ve been there.
Before I discovered my own neurodivergence, I had no formal label for why everyday demands left me so depleted. Allowing myself to question, explore, and finally claim my neurodivergent identity changed everything. It brought a massive wave of relief alongside deep grief for my younger self, who tried so hard to survive in spaces and relationships not built for her nervous system.
Because my practice is rooted in both clinical training and lived experience from the inside out, you will never be asked to "prove" your neurodivergence at Therapy with Laury. Whether you have a formal diagnosis, a self-realization, or just a quiet hunch that traditional therapy has missed the mark for you, you are welcome here. You are free to be you.

What We Focus On in Therapy (When We Skip the Diagnostic Gatekeeping)
Because we aren't spending our sessions checking boxes on a diagnostic clipboard, we can focus immediately on what actually helps you feel safer and more grounded in your life:
- Bottom-Up Expressive Arts & Play: If you tend to intellectualize your emotions (or experience alexithymia, where it is hard to put physical feelings into words), we don't have to rely only on talking. While metaphor and story may come into play, we can use visual art, intuitive mark-making, collage, and play from the comfort of your home so you can process complex experiences without verbal and environmental pressures.
- Nervous System & Somatic Care: Instead of using top-down mindset tricks to force yourself through exhaustion, we tune into what your body is communicating (interoception).
- Relational Healing: Moving through the world as an undiagnosed or late-identified neurodivergent person leaves relational wounds. Together, we untangle the internalized shame of past misunderstandings, helping you build boundaries and relationships where you don't have to perform to be loved.
Formal Evaluation vs. Neuro-Affirming Therapy: Which Do You Need?
While you never need a formal evaluation to work with me, sometimes people wonder if they should still pursue testing down the road. Here is a simple way to compare the two:
| When a Formal Diagnostic Assessment Is Necessary | When Neuro-Affirming Therapy (No Diagnosis Required) Is the Right Fit |
|---|---|
| You need legal documentation to request formal ADA workplace accommodations or academic disability testing time (like on the Bar exam, MCAT, or SATs). | You want a safe, informed space to explore your identity, unpack late-realization grief, and figure out how to connect with and express who you authentically are. |
| You are seeking prescription ADHD stimulant medication from a psychiatrist who requires formal testing first. | You are recovering from high-masking or AuDHD burnout and need nervous system regulation, sensory safety, and relational healing. |
| You are applying for state regional center services or government disability benefits. | You want bottom-up support (expressive arts, play, somatics, and relational depth) for anxiety, trauma, creative blocks, or relationship stress. |
| You want an official medical code added to your permanent health chart. | You prefer private-pay care where you can receive support without a mandatory label placed on your permanent insurance record. |
Therapy with Laury Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What if we start therapy and I realize I'm not autistic or ADHD, just deeply sensitive or healing from trauma?
That is completely okay! Complex trauma, high sensitivity (HSP), and neurodivergence share a massive amount of nervous system overlap. You are never locked into a label here. Whether your nervous system was shaped by neurodivergent wiring, relational trauma, or both, our work together (somatics, expressive arts, and relational depth) adapts to who you are.
Can my teen start online neuro-affirming therapy if they haven't been formally evaluated?
Yes. Many teens mask heavily at school to blend in or avoid drawing attention to themselves, only to experience massive exhaustion or meltdowns the moment they get home. You do not need to wait on a school district IEP evaluation or a pediatric neuropsychologist waitlist to get your teen support. Therapy with Laury respects the full humanity and autonomy of teens, meeting them where they are without labels or forced compliance.
How does Private Pay protect my diagnostic privacy, and how do Superbills work in California?
When you use in-network health insurance for therapy, the therapist is legally required to assign you an official mental health disorder diagnosis from the DSM after your very first session just to justify payment. Working via Private Pay means no mandatory diagnosis is placed on your permanent medical record unless you choose to use your out-of-network benefits.
If you do want to use a PPO insurance plan with out-of-network benefits, I can provide a monthly Superbill for partial reimbursement (which does require a basic billing code, though it does not require a formal autism/ADHD neuropsych evaluation), and HSA/FSA cards are always accepted. As a Registered Associate Marriage and Family Therapist, I provide online therapy across California under the clinical supervision of a licensed practitioner.

If you are tired of feeling like you need a permission slip to take care of your nervous system, or if you want a space where you never have to perform "being a good client," you deserve support that meets you right where you are.
Whether you are questioning your neurodivergence, navigating AuDHD burnout, working through a creative block, or looking for a warm, expressive space for yourself or your teen, Therapy with Laury offers online neurodivergent-affirming and neurodivergent-informed therapy across California.
